Africa has long been considered an adventure-seeker's paradise. And for the wildlife enthusiast, the chance to see migratory herds on the open savanna or an abundance of colorful birds is nothing short of thrilling.

Whether you are game for a trip to the Kenyan bush or an experience closer to home, here are five ways you and your family can get a taste of life on safari:

Into Africa. Drive by a pride of lions in a safari rig, walk through herds of plains game or observe elephants from the comfort of your lodge veranda in Kenya. You and your family will delight in seeing rare and intriguing animals in their natural habitats. Contact: www.magical kenya.com.

Out of Africa. You'll see more than 400 animals, including lions, tigers and giraffes, within this wildlife park 90 minutes north of Phoenix. Special programs include the Tiger Splash, the Giant Snake Show and a chance to watch predators feed. Open year-round from Wednesdays through Sundays. Wild Animal Park. If you can't make it to Africa this year, try the Kilimanjaro Safari Walk at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park, a wildlife sanctuary for more than 3,500 animals. Along the two-mile trail you'll see herds of giraffes, gazelles and wildebeests stroll by on the 100-acre East Africa Field Exhibit. Then check out the storks, flamingos and pelicans at the Mombasa Lagoon. Contact: www.sandiegozoo.org.

Safari West. For a taste of the African experience, stay overnight in a luxurious tent cabin within the 400-acre Safari West animal park in Santa Rosa, Calif. From the deck of each cabin, guests can view grazing giraffes and then fall asleep to the sounds of exotic animals cruising nearby. During daylight hours, hop in a safari-style Jeep for a tour with knowledgeable guides. Contact: 1-800- 616-2695; www.safari west.com.

Animal Safari. Hop on the zebra-striped bus, rent a zebra van or drive your car for a chance to see a rhino, lions, tigers and bison in a natural setting near Pine Mountain, Ga. Later, take a walk for more animal viewing. Contact: 1-800- 367-2751; www.animal safari.com.
