Dating diva Jacqui Malouf knows about love connections. The comedienne and author of Booty Food was in Dallas last week to promote a speed dating extravaganza in partnership with 8minuteDating and Penguin Wines.
About 40 men and women came to Lift Lounge for the chance at 20 short dates each. Malouf shared her observations about the night in addition to speed dating tips.

Q: Speed dating is sometimes criticized for being a little shallow – can you really know about your compatibility in such a short time?
A: Eight minutes seems to be the perfect amount of time for folks to start a conversation. You can tell that when the vibe between a duo lacked any energy or connection that it seemed like the longest eight minutes of their lives.
It's just enough time to whet the appetite for someone new. The structure of the speed dating system seems to provide a real safety net. You can get in, open up and get out fast.
Q: How can a person prepare?
A: Think about how your best friend would describe you and all of the great things that they might say. Think about the things that you love and feel passionate about.
Q: Should speed daters ask the same questions for every person?
A: It seemed like some folks had their good old dating questions at the ready, and that seemed to be working for them. Any priors (marriages or arrests)? Do you live with your parents? Do you have a job? Successful daters seemed to really be clicking when they threw all that away and got swept up in the liveliness of great natural conversation. You could see the sparks – it was so cool!
Q: What are the biggest speed dating no-nos?
A: Don't drink too much. It's easy to let your nerves take over – take it slow and responsible. Be kind. If you are not feeling it, be polite.
